My dear son,
I'm sitting here, staring at the screen as I have been for the last hour and, even while I have finally begun to type, I am unsure of what to say or how it should be said.
Last night, before a dinner to which I had invited your brother Jake, he lost what little rationality remained to him and attacked Christian at the gatehouse.
Christian is fine, as is his friend Johnny, so be reassured on that score, no member of the family was harmed and Jake is now in custody and incarcerated at Holyoak, where he will remain indefinitely.
The news does not end there, however and it distresses me to have to impart it. It appears that Jake has also murdered one of the staff, my personal valet, Joel, and the police are investigating the matter. I will, of course, keep you up-to-date on developments.
If you were sitting before me, as part of me wishes you were,while yet another part is glad you were not here, are safe, I know that now is when you would be asking the question we have all asked ourselves these past hours. And that is 'why?'.
The most obvious answer is, because I had just told Jake that he could never reign in Calera, that he had been declared officially unfit to rule and that I have chosen his brother Christian as my heir.
Yes, Craig, you are off the hook, Christian is Crown Prince and thoughts of the succession need never bother you again. [I am, you know, smiling as I type this. Even in the midst of horror, there is joy to be found, no?]
The deeper, more complex 'why'? Well, perhaps one day Jake can tell us, or maybe the doctors at Holyoak may be able to shed some light in the future.
Please, do not think you have to come home. Everything is under control and naturally, until we have all the information we require, under wraps as well. I will, as promised, make sure you are kept informed of what is occurring.
